Wed 13 October 2021:
The US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) on Tuesday authorized the first electronic cigarettes in the U.S., saying the R.J. Reynolds vaping products can benefit adult smokers.
The Food and Drug Administration claimed the company’s Vuse e-cigarettes helped smokers quit or dramatically reduce their use of cigarettes, the leading preventable cause of death in the United States, according to data supplied by the company.
The FDA announced on Tuesday that it had given permission to R.J. Reynolds (RJR) Vapor Company for its Vuse Solo closed electronic nicotine delivery system (ENDS) device and accompanying tobacco-flavored e-liquid pods, specifically, Vuse Solo Power Unit, Vuse Replacement Cartridge Original 4.8 percent G1, and Vuse Replacement Cartridge Original 4.8 percent G2.
Following years of pressure from lawmakers and public health groups to regulate the vaping sector as strictly as other tobacco products, the agency has made this decision as part of a broader review of the industry.
“Today’s authorizations are an important step toward ensuring all new tobacco products undergo the FDA’s robust, scientific premarket evaluation,” said Mitch Zeller, director of the FDA’s tobacco center, in a statement.
“The manufacturer’s data demonstrates its tobacco-flavored products could benefit addicted adult smokers who switch to these products – either completely or with a significant reduction in cigarette consumption.”
“We must remain vigilant with this authorization and we will monitor the marketing of the products, including whether the company fails to comply with any regulatory requirements or if credible evidence emerges of significant use by individuals who did not previously use a tobacco product, including youth.”
“We will take action as appropriate, including withdrawing the authorization.”
In recent years, the vaping industry has expanded to include hundreds of businesses selling a wide range of devices and nicotine solutions in a variety of flavors and strengths. However, a few businesses, namely Juul Labs, which is partially owned by Altria, and Vuse, dominate the vast majority of the market.
