Sat 17 August 2024:
In a virtual meeting on Friday, U.S. officials vowed to bolster direct support to Myanmar’s opposition movement, aiming to facilitate a transition to civilian government. The U.S. State Department emphasized the need to maintain pressure on Myanmar’s military junta, which has held power since a 2021 coup derailed the nation’s path towards democracy.
During the meeting, the U.S. reiterated its commitment to expanding direct aid to pro-democracy forces in Myanmar. This support is intended to strengthen the opposition’s unity and enhance their ability to deliver essential public services and humanitarian aid amidst the ongoing crisis.
Both sides agreed to collaborate with the international community, including the United Nations and the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN), to seek a resolution to Myanmar’s crisis. This aligns with global efforts to restore peace and democratic governance in the country.
