Washington repatriates 27 Americans, including 10 charged with terrorism-related offenses for support to group
The US said Thursday it brought back all 27 Americans from Syria and Iraq who are accused of supporting the Daesh/ISIS terror group.
The list includes 10 charged with terrorism-related offenses for support of the group, according to the Justice Department.
The suspects were being held by the YPG/PKK terror group, which uses the name SDF.
Assistant Attorney General for National Security John Demers said the agency “worked tirelessly” to repatriate and charge those who abandoned supporting terrorist groups.
“This was our moral responsibility to the American people and to the people of the countries to which these terrorists traveled,” said Demers.
In addition, the department called on other nations, particularly in Western Europe, to take responsibility for their nationals and said it will assist “any country that takes responsibility for their citizens who left to take up arms” to back Daesh’s “reign of hate and intolerance.”
Four American who are suspected of backing Daesh were repatriated from Syria this month.
On Wednesday, two suspects, Emraan Ali and Jihad Ali, made their initial appearance in a court in the Southern District of Florida.
