Thu 13 February 2025:
The United States has imposed sanctions on International Criminal Court (ICC) Prosecutor Karim Khan, escalating tensions over the court’s actions against Israeli officials. The move follows an executive order issued by President Donald Trump last week, which authorized asset freezes and travel bans on ICC officials.
The sanctions come in response to the ICC’s decision to issue arrest warrants for Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and former Defense Minister Yoav Gallant over alleged war crimes in Gaza. The measures against Khan include the freezing of assets within the US, a ban on American citizens conducting business with him, and restrictions on his travel to the United States. Additionally, the sanctions may extend to his immediate family.

Under the executive order, any individual or entity attempting to provide financial or material support to Khan in an effort to bypass the sanctions will also face punitive measures. This broad prohibition aims to ensure strict enforcement of the US Treasury Department’s sanctions list.
The decision has drawn international attention, with critics arguing it undermines the ICC’s independence, while supporters of the sanctions assert they are necessary to counter politically motivated actions against US allies. The US has historically opposed ICC investigations involving its personnel and allies, citing concerns over jurisdiction and fairness.
