VENEZUELANS PROTEST AS MADURO DECLARED ELECTION WINNER

Mon 29 July 2024:

Venezuelans flooded the streets of Caracas after the electoral authority declared President Nicolas Maduro the winner of a contentious election, which the opposition claims was marred by fraud. Demonstrations erupted near the capital’s largest poor neighborhood, Petare, with protesters tearing down Maduro’s campaign posters and chanting, “It’s going to fall. This government is going to fall!”

The National Electoral Council (CNE), controlled by Maduro loyalists, confirmed his re-election for the 2025-2031 term, sparking widespread public anger. The opposition, led by candidate Edmundo Gonzalez, claimed their counts showed Gonzalez winning with 70 percent of the vote, contrary to the CNE’s report of Maduro winning with 51 percent.

In a televised address, Maduro asserted that “an attempt is being made to impose a coup d’etat in Venezuela,” alleging without evidence that hackers attempted to disrupt the electoral process. He vowed that Venezuela’s “law will be respected.”

Opposition leaders, calling for calm, insisted that the election was fraudulent and demanded the release of detailed voting results. Gonzalez emphasized that the majority of Venezuelans aspire to change, stating, “Our struggle continues and we’ll not rest until the will of the Venezuelan people is respected.”

Global leaders and election observers, including the United Nations and The Carter Center, urged Venezuela to publish a full breakdown of the election results. UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres called for “complete transparency” and peaceful resolution of electoral disputes.

Public frustration was palpable, with protesters participating in “cacerolazo” demonstrations by banging pots and pans. Personal stories, like that of retiree Dalia Romero, highlighted the human cost of the political turmoil. Romero, battling breast cancer, lamented that Maduro’s re-election shattered her dream of reuniting with her daughter in Argentina.

Nine Latin American countries, including Panama, requested an emergency meeting of the Organization of American States (OAS) to address the disputed election results. Panama announced it would put diplomatic relations with Venezuela on hold pending a full review. Meanwhile, left-wing governments in the region, such as Brazil and Chile, called for impartial verification and total transparency of the election process.
