Donald Trump, a former US president, defied pleas from inside his own Republican party to retire after his supporters failed in this year’s midterm elections by announcing his formal entry into the race for the White House on Tuesday.
The 76-year-old billionaire, whose victory in 2016 surprised both the United States and the rest of the globe, has invited the media to his Florida house for a “very big announcement” at 9 o’clock on Tuesday (0200 GMT Wednesday).
“President Trump is going to announce on Tuesday that he’s running for president,” said one of his advisors, Jason Miller, who predicts the speech will be “very professional, very buttoned up.”
Known for his unpredictability, Trump could still change his mind at the last minute, but for months he has barely hidden his desire to vie for the presidency again in 2024.
Biden reiterated on Wednesday that he plans to run for reelection, the 2024 election may end up mirroring the results of the 2020 election.
However, given his age and unpopularity, some in Biden’s own camp would undoubtedly prefer for him to sit out despite the positive midterm results. The 80-year-old Biden stated that he will decide next year.
