Thu 22 August 2024:
New Zealand’s White Island, also known as Whakaari, erupted on Thursday, releasing a towering ash plume that grounded several domestic flights. Air New Zealand canceled 10 flights as volcanic ash drifted across flight paths. Government scientists warned that this activity, part of the island’s “typical eruptive cycles,” could persist for weeks or even months.
The latest satellite images revealed minor eruptions earlier in the month, leading New Zealand to raise its volcanic alert level to three out of five. Although some residents may experience mild effects like irritation from volcanic gas, the overall impact is expected to be minor.

Whakaari, is New Zealand’s most active volcano, located 50 km off the North Island’s coast. It has been continuously active for thousands of years, with its first recorded eruption in 1826. The island has seen numerous eruptions, often spewing ash and steam, making it a popular but hazardous tourist destination.
In 2019, Whakaari experienced a tragic eruption that killed 22 people who were visiting the island. This event led to increased scrutiny of tourism on active volcanoes and the island being off-limits to the public since then. The volcano remains under close observation due to its unpredictable nature, with scientists regularly monitoring its activity. Whakaari’s history is a stark reminder of the powerful forces of nature that continue to shape New Zealand’s landscape.
