“WE DON’T TREAT MUSLIMS,” PREGNANT MUSLIM WOMAN DENIED TREATMENT IN INDIA’S JAUNPUR

A mother-to be Muslim woman was denied treatment in a hospital in Uttar Pradesh’s Jaunpur due to her religious identity.

Shama Parveen in a video alleged that on Tuesday night when she went to the hospital, the doctor said that Muslim patients will not be treated in the hospital.

In the Indian state of Uttar Pradesh, a pregnant Muslim woman said that a female Hindu doctor at Jaunpur’s district hospital refused to assist with her delivery on Tuesday night because of her religion.

She said, “I was admitted at 9 am, but till now my delivery hasn’t been done. The doctor ordered everyone here not to send me to the operation theatre. I am lying in bed and the doctor has refused to treat me.”

On the same day as Parveen, another Muslim woman was admitted who was also denied treatment by the doctor due to her religious identity.

Arman, Parveen’s husband said, “She checked all patients and refused only to my wife and the other Muslim woman.”

Parveen also said that she and her husband confronted the doctor and called out her discrimination based on religion. She alleged that despite confrontation, the doctor continued to ignore her.

A similar incident was reported after the Pahalgam attack when the country witnessed a surge in hate crimes, discrimination and calls for boycott against Muslims. A Muslim woman from Kolkata was denied treatment by a doctor who reportedly told the woman she doesn’t treat “Muslim patients.” The incident took a mental toll on the woman whose family said that she was very distressed after the denial and that it was “a blatant act of discrimination.”

Parveen’s family has demanded action against the doctor and hospital management. While the authorities are yet to issue an official statement, the incident comes as a shocker exposing hatred that has made its way into medical facilities where everyone deserves equal treatment, care and support irrespective of their religion, caste and gender.
