WEST WANTS TO “DICTATE WHAT IT WANTS” TO QATAR, “ISLAMIC LAW DOES NOT ACCEPT LGBTQ”: MINISTER

Members of the LGBTQ community can go to the World Cup in Qatar but the West cannot “dictate” to Qataris what they should believe, Qatar’s energy minister told Germany’s Bild newspaper.

“If they want to visit Qatar, we have no problem with it,” Minister of State for Energy Affairs Saad Sherida Al-Kaabi said, speaking to Bild in comments published on Wednesday.

But he said the West wants to “dictate what it wants” to Qatar, where homosexuality is illegal.

“If you want to change me so that I will say that I believe in LGBTQ, that my family should be LGBTQ, that I accept LGBTQ in my country, that I change my laws and the Islamic laws in order to satisfy the West – then this is not acceptable,” he added.

“As Muslims, we believe that LGBTQ is not acceptable in our religion,” Al-Kaabi said. “Islamic law does not accept LGBTQ.” The English abbreviation LGBTQ stands for lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender and queer.

He rejected international – and above all from Germany – criticism of Qatar’s position on this issue. “The West wants to dictate to us what it wants,” he said. He goes further and says: “Where is my human right to choose what I want for my religion, my country, my children and my family?”

It is required “that we as Qataris have to change. That we have to change our religion, our faith.” This is “unacceptable”.

Qatar’s Energy Minister Saad Sharida al-Kaabi signed the gas deal with Germany on Tuesday morning. From 2026, Qatar will send the Federal Republic of Germany two million tons of LNG liquid gas per year.
