Mon 22 July 2024:
WhatsApp is enhancing its platform with a new feature that translates messages using various language packs. This follows the recent introduction of voice note transcription, aiming to facilitate seamless multilingual communication within the app.
Enhanced Communication with Instant Translation
The new feature allows for instant message translation during chats, promoting smoother communication across different languages. This is part of WhatsApp’s ongoing efforts to improve user experience and accessibility without relying on external translation tools.
WhatsApp Chat Translation Mechanism
According to WABetaInfo, WhatsApp plans to introduce an option for automatic translation of all chat messages in a future update. This feature will operate locally on users’ devices, preserving end-to-end encryption and ensuring efficient message processing. Initially, the available languages will include English, Portuguese, Russian, Arabic, Spanish, and Hindi, with more options expected in future updates.

On-Device Processing for Enhanced Security
By processing translations on-device, WhatsApp aims to maintain strong security measures and data privacy. This approach eliminates the need to send messages to external servers for translation, aligning with WhatsApp’s commitment to protecting user information.
Voice Note Transcription Feature
WhatsApp is also testing a voice note transcription feature that converts voice notes into text, allowing users to read messages without playing them aloud. Currently in beta testing, this feature is expected to be more broadly available after further refinement.
Implementation and Availability
Users participating in the beta testing program can access the voice note transcription feature after downloading an additional 150MB of data. The new features will be automatically enabled for most users, while some may require manual activation based on their settings.
