WHATSAPP TO INTRODUCE ENHANCED PRIVACY FEATURE FOR IOS USERS

Tue 08 April 2025:

WhatsApp, Meta’s messaging app, is developing an enhanced chat privacy tool to restrict message forwarding, set to roll out in an upcoming update.

This new feature is designed to give users greater control over their conversations by disabling automatic media downloads to the device gallery and restricting the ability to export entire chat histories outside the app in the future, reported WABetaInfo.

Ensuring that sensitive content stays within the app and giving users greater confidence that their conversations won’t be easily shared or stored without their consent would add a new layer of privacy and security to chats.

The experience will be rolled out to iOS users in the future by the Meta platform.

The feature will also block the ability to export the entire chat history in addition to limiting media saving, preventing users from transferring chats outside the app.

Within the WhatsApp ecosystem, this ensures that sensitive conversations are kept secure, where they are subject to the built-in privacy protections of the app.

Privacy feature to restrict messages, media sharing

WhatsApp is bringing a new feature through its latest update for its Android users by releasing an advanced chat privacy feature to limit message sharing.

The new feature will allow users to restrict media — photos, videos, voice messages, documents, etc — from being automatically saved on their devices, meaning that if a recipient receives media in a conversation with someone who has turned on this feature, those files will not be saved to their device gallery.

It is similar to the existing disappearing messages, and it now shows that the socialising app is working to extend it, and just as the disappearing messages feature, it is also optional. Users can decide whether to enable it in specific chats based on their preferences from the app settings.

By enabling this setting, users will also be able to gain greater control over their entire conversations that are shared, diminishing the risk of unauthorised chat exports and providing an added sense of security, specifically in conversations containing sensitive or private discussions.
