WHITE HOUSE SWAPS COVID SITE FOR WUHAN LAB LEAK THEORY PAGE

Sat 19 April 2025:

The Trump administration replaced the Covid.gov website with a platform that centers on the theory that the coronavirus originated from a laboratory in Wuhan, China, NBC News reported Friday.

Once a hub for COVID-19 resources such as vaccine information, testing access and long COVID support, the site now redirects users to a White House page referencing a December report by the Republican-led House Select Subcommittee on the Coronavirus Pandemic. The report concluded that the pandemic likely began due to a “laboratory or research-related accident.”

White House spokesperson Kaelan Dorr said in a statement to NBC News that the change reflects the Trump administration’s commitment to transparency, adding, “In contrast to the previous administration, we WILL be the most transparent administration in US history.”

The move comes weeks after the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention slashed $11.4 billion in COVID-19 funding, while the National Institutes of Health canceled multiple research grants, including a $577 million project to develop oral antiviral drugs.

The Wuhan lab leak theory posits that SARS-CoV-2, the virus causing COVID-19, may have originated from a laboratory in Wuhan, China, specifically the Wuhan Institute of Virology (WIV).

The theory suggests the virus could have escaped due to accidental release during research on bat coronaviruses, which WIV was studying extensively. Proponents point to the lab’s proximity to the initial outbreak, its biosecurity level-4 facilities, and reports of gain-of-function research.

A 2021 U.S. intelligence report noted some WIV researchers fell ill in late 2019, and a 2023 declassified report found the lab leak “plausible” but inconclusive. Critics argue there’s no direct evidence, and the natural origin theory—via a wet market or wildlife trade—is equally plausible, supported by early case clusters near Wuhan’s Huanan market.

The WHO’s 2021 investigation deemed a lab leak “extremely unlikely,” but faced criticism for limited access. The debate remains unresolved, with political tensions and lack of transparency fueling speculation.
