Thu 08 May 2025:

Before his name was proclaimed from St. Peter’s Basilica’s balcony, the crowd below cheered “Viva il Papa” — Long live the Pope.
Robert Prevost, aged 69, will be the 267th pope, reigning as Leo XIV.

Cardinal Robert Francis Prevost, born September 14, 1955, in Chicago, is the first American pope, elected on May 8, 2025, taking the name Leo XIV. A member of the Order of Saint Augustine, Prevost has a diverse background, blending U.S. roots with extensive experience in Peru, where he served as a missionary, bishop, and naturalized citizen.

He holds degrees in mathematics from Villanova, theology from Catholic Theological Union, and canon law from the Pontifical University of St. Thomas Aquinas in Rome.

Prevost’s career includes roles as prior general of the Augustinians (2001–2013), Bishop of Chiclayo, Peru (2015–2023), and prefect of the Dicastery for Bishops (2023–2025), a key Vatican position overseeing bishop appointments globally.

Elevated to cardinal in 2023, he became a prominent figure in the Catholic Church, known for his pastoral focus and alignment with Pope Francis’ vision of inclusivity, humility, and outreach to the poor and marginalized.

Described as a moderate, Prevost supports inclusive policies like Communion for divorced Catholics but opposes ordaining women as deacons and has expressed reservations about practices conflicting with Church doctrine, such as same-sex blessings.

His dual U.S.-Peruvian citizenship and global experience made him a compromise candidate in a conclave wary of America’s geopolitical dominance.

However, his papacy faces scrutiny. Critics, including clergy abuse advocates, point to allegations of mishandling sexual abuse cases in Chicago and Peru, though his supporters argue these claims are exaggerated or unfairly weaponized.

Prevost’s leadership is expected to emphasize synodality, unity, and pastoral care, continuing Francis’ legacy while navigating a polarized Church
