An eight-year-old Pekingese named Wild Thang was declared the winner of the World’s Ugliest Dog Competition on Friday, June 21. After years of competing, Wild Thang triumphed over seven other contestants at the event held at a fairground in California.

Wild Thang, originally from Los Angeles and now living in Coos Bay, Oregon, claimed his first victory at the Sonoma-Marin Fair in Petaluma after four attempts. He had previously secured second place three times.

The contest, which has been running for nearly 50 years, celebrates the unique charm of dogs of all breeds and sizes. According to the event’s website, it aims to highlight the beauty in all dogs, despite their unusual appearances.

Wild Thang and his owner, Ann Lewis, received a $5,000 prize. Second place went to Rome, a 14-year-old pug, who won $3,000, and Daisy May, a 14-year-old mixed-breed rescue dog, took third place with a $2,000 prize.

Wild Thang’s distinctive appearance is due to a disease that prevented his teeth from growing, causing his tongue to hang out, and a muscular disorder affecting his leg. Despite these challenges, his owner describes him as a “healthy, happy Glugly (glamorous/ugly) guy” who loves people, other dogs, and his toys. Wild Thang also promotes the importance of pet vaccinations.
