Tue 07 December 2021:
The World Bank announced on Monday that its support had assisted in the delivery of 100 million doses of COVID-19 vaccines around the world, with the total projected to reach 150 million by the end of the month assuming doses arrive on time.
President David Malpass of the World Agency said the global development bank had contracted for over 300 million doses, with $7.5 billion in vaccine financing activities set to begin by the end of December for 69 countries.
Malpass, speaking at a US Agency for International Development conference, emphasized the importance of affluent countries promptly fulfilling their generous dose donation pledges, and presented a new database to track which countries needed financial and operational assistance.
Delivery swaps, such as the one recently completed by the African Union, the United States, and Moderna, were also beneficial in meeting short-term requirements.
“Readiness and deployment are critical. Ample funding is available and we’re working with partners … to address the current crisis and prepare for future ones,” Malpass said, adding that enhanced data and transparency were critical to ensure that resources flowed where they were most needed.
The new World Bank Vaccine Deployment Tracker, according to Malpass, will aid in the resolution of specific bottlenecks in vaccine deployment. The World Bank and the COVAX Country Readiness and Delivery Team, which comprises the World Health Organization, UNICEF, and GAVI, collaborated on it.
