Thu 02 December 2021:

According to the UN World Food Program (WFP), there are around 23 million Afghans in need of immediate food assistance, and $2.6 billion is needed to reach them this year.

“Humanitarian needs in (Afghanistan) have increased… with all 34 provinces facing crisis or emergency levels of food insecurity. As a result, some 23 million Afghans require urgent food assistance, a figure never seen before. This includes more than three million children who are at risk of severe hunger and the life-threatening consequences of malnutrition,” the UN program said on Wednesday.

“The WFP is seeking $2.6 billion for its operations in Afghanistan over the coming year.”

Food insecurity has been reported in remote areas of Afghanistan as a result of a combination of extended drought, economic collapse, conflict, and the COVID-19 epidemic, according to the UN.

According to the statement, this has resulted in an 80% increase in the price of bread, which is a staple item for many people in the country.

WFP Afghanistan Director Mary-Ellen McGroarty urged the international community to keep humanitarian concerns separate from political debates.
