Fri 28 October 2022:
A nonagenarian Iranian man who was known as the “world’s dirtiest” passed only a few months after taking his first shower in more than 70 years.
Amou Haji, often known as “Uncle Haji,” was 94 years old when he passed away on Sunday in Dezhgah village in the southern province of Fars, according to the Iranian news agency IRNA.
He has avoided taking baths for more than fifty years for a variety of reasons.
The surrounding villagers, on the other hand, thought the hermit had experienced “emotional setbacks in his youth” that may have produced some form of trauma that prompted him to refuse to bathe, even by water. Local officials stated that Haji, who was unmarried, avoided showering out of fear of “getting sick.”
One time, his neighbours tried to bathe him in the local river, but after realising the purpose of the trip, Haji threw himself out of the car.
But “for the first time a few months ago, villagers had taken him to a bathroom to wash,” after he fell ill, IRNA reported.
He would often be found roaming around the streets covered in soot and living in a cinder-block shack, which was built by local villagers.
The 94-year-old hermit would survive by eating rotting carcasses as he believed that fresh food could make him sick.
He would smoke a pipe filled with animal excrement, the Tehran Times reported in 2014. And was also pictured smoking several cigarettes at a time.
Haji’s funeral is set for Tuesday night in Farashband City, Fars, according to local media.
After Haji’s death, a 67-year-old Indian man from western Maharashtra state who had also not taken a bath in more than 30 years would have the unofficial title of “world’s dirtiest man.”
