Sat 24 August 2024:
A colossal 2,492-carat diamond, now the second largest in the world, has been discovered in Botswana by Canadian mining company Lucara Diamond Corp. The massive stone was unearthed at the Karowe Diamond Mine in northeastern Botswana using advanced X-ray technology, Lucara announced on Thursday.
Although the company has not yet disclosed the value or quality of the diamond, it is only surpassed by the legendary 3,016-carat Cullinan Diamond, found in South Africa in 1905. “We are ecstatic about the recovery of this extraordinary 2,492-carat diamond,” said Lucara President William Lamb in the statement.

A Monumental Discovery: New Technology Unlocks Hidden Gems
Images released by Lucara show the diamond is as large as a human palm. This discovery, one of the largest rough diamonds ever found, was made possible by the Mega Diamond Recovery X-ray technology, installed by Lucara in 2017 to detect and preserve large, high-value stones.
Botswana’s Pride: President Masisi Presented with the Remarkable Stone
Botswana’s President Mokgweetsi Masisi was shown the enormous diamond on Thursday, with his government confirming it as the second largest in the world. Tobias Kormind, managing director of Europe’s largest online diamond jeweller, 77 Diamonds, noted that the use of newer technology was crucial in extracting such large diamonds without causing damage.
Botswana: A Diamond Powerhouse
Botswana, one of the world’s leading diamond producers, relies heavily on diamond mining, which accounts for 30% of its GDP and 80% of its exports. The country recently proposed a law requiring mining companies to offer a 24% stake in mines to local investors unless the government opts to acquire the shareholding.

A Legacy of Giant Diamonds: Karowe Mine’s Rich History
Before this latest discovery, the largest diamond found in Botswana was a 1,758-carat stone named Sewelo, also mined by Lucara at Karowe in 2019. In 2021, Lucara uncovered another massive 1,174-carat diamond using the same cutting-edge X-ray technology, further solidifying Botswana’s reputation as a leading source of the world’s most extraordinary diamonds.
