Wed 13 July 2022:
The eagerly anticipated Picture-in-Picture (PiP) mode will soon be available for iOS devices, according to an announcement from Google-owned streaming service Youtube.
With this new function, iOS users can browse other apps on their phones while watching YouTube videos in a tiny micro player.
“We recognise this has been a slow roll out for a highly requested feature, and want to thank everyone who shared feedback during experiments and waited patiently for this moment,” the company said in a blog post.
Globally, access to PiP for both music and non-musical content will be available to all Premium subscribers on iPhones and iPads.
To turn on the feature, users will need to go to ‘Settings’ first and then they can go to ‘General’ on their YouTube app and turn on PiP mode.
According to the firm, users who don’t use PiP will still be able to use background play by default; this option is already available to premium members with Android devices and will remain so.
