Fri 24 June 2022:

Nine Syrian Arab Army soldiers were killed in an attack that was carried out by Daesh militants in eastern Syria, the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights (SOHR) announced yesterday.

SOHR reported: “The death toll of regime forces killed in and around Jabal Al-Bashari by ISIS [Daesh] fighters in 72 hours has risen to 26.”

The “fierce clashes” since Wednesday between regime forces and IS in a remote area of Raqqa province, in the country’s east, also killed seven jihadi fighters, the observatory said.

The fighting followed an ambush, claimed by IS, against a bus carrying fighters from the regular army and allied militia on the desert road linking the cities of Raqqa and Homs.

An attack on Monday, one of the deadliest of its kind this year, left at least 15 dead according to the observatory.

The monitor also said that on Wednesday, another four soldiers were killed in an IS ambush near Dumayr military airport, east of Damascus, and that two more were killed earlier this week in the Raqqa region.

Syrian President Bashar —al- Assad’s regime has clawed back much of the area lost in the early phases of the conflict, which began in 2011 when the government ruthlessly suppressed pro-democracy protesters.

Hundreds of thousands of people have died as a result of the fighting, and ISIL has emerged in Syria and Iraq.

Analysts have long expected a resurgence of the group, but it has been unable to significantly expand, and its actions have generally been limited to cell strikes.
