Russia is planned to send at least 40,000 militants from the Syrian army and other militias to Ukraine, according to the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights.

Last week, the Kremlin said that President Vladimir Putin had given the go-ahead for Syrian rebels to come to Ukraine to fight in the conflict. Russian officers had already began the registration process, according to the Syrian watchdog.

Russia had entered the Syrian conflict in 2015 on the side of Bashar al-Assad’s regime and had tested most of its modern weapons system. The Syrian combatants being sent to Ukraine include those from the regular army or the pro-regime militia groups, the watchdog said.

The Observatory added the Syrian fighters are likely to be given a salary of $1,100 to fight in Ukraine including $7,700 in compensation for injuries. The families will reportedly get $16,500 if they are killed in combat.

According to reports, the “Wagner” group is also involved in the operation, with the Syrian regime’s ruling Baath party expected to recruit thousands of people. The “Wagner” force is a private militia thought to be loyal to Putin’s regime.

According to reports, Syrian mercenaries have fought in Libya and Nagorno-Karabakh. The news comes as Russian soldiers intensify their attacks on Kyiv, with reports suggesting severe fighting in the capital’s environs.
