The Duke and Duchess of Sussex, Prince Harry, and Meghan Markle, according to a survey issued the day after Meghan made headlines for her remarks about the royal family in an interview with a US magazine, are disliked or unsympathetic by more than half of British people.

The survey, which used data from YouGov and global opinion, was made public on Tuesday, August 30.

A total of 2,627 British citizens participated in the study; of those, 43% indicated they felt no pity or compassion for the couple and 22% said they didn’t care much. The remaining 13% of people claimed to be impartial, while another 22% stated they had a fair bit of pity for the pair.

The couple’s announcement of their trip to the UK and Germany in the month of September, together with Markle’s solo podcast Archetypes, and her interview with the Cut, contributed to the survey’s data, Newsweek reported.

The couple’s popularity fell precipitously when they announced that they would stop serving as working royals and will move to the United States. The situation changed even further when the couple had a direct interview with Oprah Winfrey in May 2021, where she revealed the family’s intolerable intrusions and racist views in the British media.

Prior to their visit to the UK for the Queen’s Platinum Jubilee festivities, where Markle made her first public appearance in the nation since she left the royal family, the couple’s popularity fell precipitously in May.

However, Queen Elizabeth II continues to have the highest level of popularity in the UK.
