Sat 19 September 2026:
US President Donald Trump said Friday that his meeting with Chinese President Xi Jinping next week will include “a lot of different deals,” adding that the two leaders will have a “very good meeting.”
“President Xi and I have a good relationship,” Trump told reporters in the Oval Office. “We’re going to have a lot of different deals here … We’re going to have a very good meeting.”
Trump said the US and China “get along very well” and pointed to tariffs imposed on Chinese goods.
“China’s paying us a lot of tariffs,” he said, mentioning the tariffs had reached 145% before he reduced them, saying the higher level was “really hurting them badly.”
Xi is scheduled to visit Washington for talks with Trump on Sept. 24.

Trump also said it was unfortunate that the White House ballroom was not yet open because he could have hosted about 2,000 people for dinner during Xi’s visit.
Asked about concerns over China’s treatment of journalists, Trump said: “I don’t know about that. I think we’re repressive also, we get fake news. We don’t repress, but they write fake news.”
Trump also said that the US and China carry out espionage against each other.
“Somebody said: ‘Oh, they spy on us.’ And I said: ‘Maybe they do, but we spy on them, too’,” he explained, adding that he would not disclose classified information.
White House deputy spokeswoman Anna Kelly later told reporters that Trump will greet Xi and his wife, Peng Liyuan, when they arrive Wednesday at Joint Base Andrews.
On Thursday, Trump and first lady Melania Trump will welcome the couple to the White House for an arrival ceremony on the State Floor, followed by a Rose Garden military review and a bilateral meeting, according to Kelly.
Trump and Melania Trump will host the Chinese delegation for a state dinner in the East Room later Thursday. Trump and Xi are expected to deliver remarks at the beginning of the dinner.
On Friday, Trump and Melania Trump will host Xi and Peng for a private meeting at the White House, Kelly added.
A senior US official, briefing reporters on the condition of anonymity, said several prominent US business leaders are expected to attend the state dinner.
Jeff Bezos, Elon Musk, Sundar Pichai, Michael Dell, Jensen Huang, Sam Altman, Jane Frazier and Tim Cook are among business leaders who will attend the dinner, said the official, adding that a number of US officials would also attend.
“It’ll be a very popular and hot-ticketed event here in Washington, D.C.,” said the official.
Asked about China’s ties with Iran, a second US official said the US would continue targeting Chinese and Hong Kong entities involved in business with Tehran.
“As far as support for Iran, I think you have seen all along this year that the United States has imposed sanctions on Chinese entities, on entities in Hong Kong, that we have found to be facilitating any kind of revenue, oil, etc, business with Iran that contributes certainly to their war effort. I think that will continue going forward,” the official said.
