Wed 02 February 2022:

As Afghanistan’s public universities reopened for the first time since the Taliban gained control of the country last year, female students joined their male counterparts.

Women were allowed to attend classes on the condition that they were physically separated from male students, according to education officials. The Taliban administration had not officially stated its plan for female university students.

The Taliban forbade women and girls from attending school under its previous regime, which lasted from 1996 to 2001. As foreign forces retreated, the organization claims it has reformed since taking power on Aug. 15.

As the Taliban seek more foreign help and the unfreezing of abroad assets, the international community has made education of girls and women a crucial part of its demands.

Late Tuesday, the United Nations applauded the inclusion of female students at the country’s public colleges, implying official recognition.

“(The) U.N. welcomes the announcement that public universities will begin re-opening 2 February to all female and male students. So crucial that every young person has equal access to education,” the U.N.’s mission to Afghanistan said in a Tweet late on Tuesday.
