Fri 19 January 2024:

The Afghan Ministry of Education has removed topics deemed against Islamic rites and Afghan culture from the primary school curriculum.

In an interview with Radio Television of Afghanistan (RTA), the ministry’s spokesperson, Mansour Ahmad Hamza, said without giving details that the contents of textbooks, that were in conflict with the teachings of Islam and Afghan culture, were removed.

According to Hamza, the process of changing the educational curriculum up to grade six has been completed and the ministry’s technical team is now working on school curricula for grades 7, 8 and 9.

Hamza also said 972 schools have been repaired in the past two years, but construction work of some of these schools has not been completed yet.

According to him, more than 40,000 new female teachers have been hired during this period.

At the same time, experts say that the Ministry of Education should first provide education for everyone and then revise the curriculum.

This comes amid an ongoing ban on girls education above grade 6 and despite wide scale pressure the Taliban government has not yet reopened schools to high school girls.
