Tue 06 May 2025:

Nearly 100 military officials from 40 African nations began a 10-day visit to China on Monday, according to an official statement.

Officers from nations including Egypt, Mozambique, Tanzania, and Kenya, will be touring China through May 15 at the invitation of the country’s Defense Ministry.

During their stay, the delegation will participate in exchange activities and visit several cities, including Beijing, Changsha and Shaoshan in central Hunan province, the ministry said.

Earlier this year, Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi pledged 1 billion yuan (about $136 million) in military aid to Africa during a trip to Namibia, DR Congo, Chad, and Nigeria.

Wang also said China would help train 6,000 troops and 1,000 police officers across the continent.

The African delegation’s visit follows the conclusion of a joint air force training exercise between China and Egypt.

The 18-day exercise, called Eagles of Civilization 2025, was held at an Egyptian air base and ended Sunday.

China has one confirmed military base in Africa, located in Djibouti since 2017, its first overseas base, costing $590 million. Situated near the Bab-el-Mandeb Strait, it supports anti-piracy operations, peacekeeping, and intelligence collection, hosting 1,000–2,000 personnel.

The base has expanded with a pier capable of docking aircraft carriers, enhancing China’s power projection in the Indian Ocean. China is reportedly seeking additional bases, with speculation around Equatorial Guinea and Gabon on the Atlantic coast, raising U.S. concerns about strategic competition.

These efforts align with China’s Belt and Road Initiative to secure trade routes and economic interests. African nations remain cautious, wary of sovereignty risks from foreign bases.
