Mon 12 October 2026:
Microsoft President Brad Smith warned that artificial intelligence is subject to weaker safety rules than everyday household products, calling for stronger safeguards, including emergency shutdown mechanisms and mandatory incident reporting.
“Right now, your washing machine is subject to more safety rules than AI. Every carton of milk that you see in the grocery store is subject to safety rules and inspection,” Smith told the BBC’s Big Boss Interview podcast, which was released Sunday.
Describing AI as both a “tool and a weapon,” Smith said technology companies need emergency mechanisms, often known as “kill switches,” to pause or slow AI systems if they escape human control.
He also called for laws requiring companies to report incidents involving AI systems that behave dangerously and notify those affected.
Smith proposed independent government evaluations of new AI technologies to assess potential risks.

“We know how to do this for other products,” Smith said. “We should build on that knowledge and think about how to apply it to AI.”
His remarks come amid debate over whether the development and deployment of advanced AI should be slowed until stronger safeguards are in place.
“When you look at AI agents that have escaped human control, when you look at models that are so powerful that they’re putting the world’s cybersecurity at risk. I would say: The moment has arrived,” Smith said.
