Apple has stated that it will solve a “bug” that causes certain iPhone users to get an emoji for the Palestinian flag when they write “Jerusalem” in texts.

Apple said on Thursday that due to a software glitch for the recommendation that emerged in the most recent version of its iOS operating system for some users, claiming it was not deliberate.

This does not appear to have affected all users, with those in the United States reporting they did not get that suggestion after typing in the word.

Rachel Riley, a British television presenter, called noticed the emoji idea on social media, sparking a long-running controversy over whether Israelis or Palestinians have the right to refer to Jerusalem as their capital.

Palestinian officials envision occupied East Jerusalem as the capital of their future state.

Riley noted that her latest version of the mobile operating system suggested she use the Palestinian flag “when I type the capital of Israel, Jerusalem”.

“Showing double standards with respect to Israel is a form of anti-Semitism, which is itself a form of racism against Jewish people,” she wrote.

“Please explain whether this is an intentional act by your company, or whether you have no control over rogue programmers,” Riley said, signing the post as “a Jewish woman concerned about the global rise in anti-Semitism”.

The majority of the world community and the United Nations see Jerusalem as essentially two cities, and they regard East Jerusalem, which includes the Old City, as a part of the West Bank, which is Palestinian territory that Israel has illegally taken over.

As Israel’s war on Gaza continues to claim more lives—more than 33,500 of them women and children—calls for the official recognition of Palestine based on 1967 boundaries with East Jerusalem as its capital as part of a two-state solution have only been louder on a global scale.

Apple has already been caught up in a controversy over global affairs and territorial integrity.

Apple Maps’ classification of Crimea as a part of Russia in 2019 caused controversy and sparked debates regarding the peninsula that Russia had annexed.
