Tue 29 March 2022:

A gunmen killed at least four people and seriously wounded another on Tuesday in a shooting in the suburbs of the Israeli city of Tel Aviv, Israeli media reported.

The head of the Magen David Adom ambulance service said the attacker was shot and there may have been other assailants, the Haaretz newspaper reported. Police later confirmed one assailant was killed.

Israeli media identified him as a 27-year-old Palestinian from the occupied West Bank.

The shooting reportedly took place in two different areas in Bnei Brak, an ultra-Orthodox Jewish area and Ramat Gan.

Police officials said a man on motorcycle opened fire towards passersby, the Times of Israel reported.

The newspaper added that Israeli Prime Minister Naftali Bennett would hold a security meeting at 10pm local time with Defense Minister Benny Gantz and other security officials.

Tuesday’s attack comes days after two similar attacks by Palestinian citizens of Israel in Beersheba and Hadera, which left a total of 6 people killed, including two police officers. All three assailants were killed.

The attack also comes a day before the 46th anniversary of the first Land Day. Palestinians have marked Land Day every 30 March since 1976, when Palestinian citizens of Israel protested against Israel’s land grab policy and discrimination.

Since Sunday’s shooting, several measures have been announced by the government, as well as armed far-right groups, which have raised concerns among Palestinian citizens in Israel who make up almost a fifth of the population.

On Monday, police said they had called in six reserve police units, with the possibility of more being called into active duty.

Islamic State motivations?

The two assailants of Hadera’s shooting, cousins Ibrahim Ighbariya and Ayman Ighbariya, are both believed to have links to the Islamic State group (IS).

Ibrahim was arrested in 2016 for attempting to join the group in Syria via Turkey, while Ayman was arrested for three weeks but never charged in 2017 on suspicion of weapons violations.

Mohammed Abu al-Kiyan, the assailant behind the stabbing attack last week, also allegedly had links to IS.

The apparent link to the militant group and the proximity of attacks have raised questions about whether Israel is now facing a new threat.
