Fri 20 May 2022:

Following North American and European countries, Australian officials verified a confirmed case of monkeypox infection on Friday (May 20).

A traveller who had recently returned from the United Kingdom was found to have the disease. Authorities have indicated that another such case is being investigated.

Another individual suffered a mild illness, according to the state health department of New South Wales (NSW). His signs and symptoms are consistent with monkeypox.

Monkeypox is a rare disease that has raised alarm when many cases were recently discovered in European countries. Monkeypox outbreaks are primarily seen in western and central Africa. It occasionally spreads to other areas.

The Monkeypox illness usually causes symptoms of fever, muscle aches and swollen lymph nodes. Chickenpox-like rashes are also found on the hands and face.

Transmission usually happens due to close contact with infected animals such as rodents and monkeys and is limited between people. It has only been fatal in rare cases.

Monkeypox was first recorded in the Democratic Republic of Congo in the 1970s and cases in West Africa have increased in the last decade.

However, the recent increase in cases has sparked concern that the disease is spreading.

Anyone “can spread monkeypox through contact with body fluids, monkeypox sores, or shared items (such as clothing and bedding) that have been contaminated with fluids or sores of a person with monkeypox”. according to the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

Household disinfectants, according to the US health agency, can eliminate the virus on surfaces.
