BABY NURSERIES IN JAPAN ARE BEING TOLD NOT TO RETURN DIRTY DIAPERS

Mon 20 February 2023:

The health ministry of Japan has advised nurseries all around the nation to discard dirty diapers on-site rather than sending the children back home with them. The choice was made in response to concerns from parents who complain that having to bring dirty diapers home is a hassle. The government will provide the nurseries subsidies so they can dispose of diapers effectively. According to Minister of Health, Labor, and Welfare Katsunobu Kato, one of the steps will be to assist them in getting trash cans for the same.

The ministry claimed that because sorting and packing diapers for “return home” is a laborious operation, the change will also make life easier for the staff members at the nurseries.

According to a poll conducted in 2022, the majority of nurseries have been doing this habitually and don’t even know why the diapers are being returned. According to a poll conducted by Babyjob Inc., an Osaka-based provider of childcare-related services, roughly 40% of the 1,461 towns with daycare facilities surveyed were returning used diapers.

Diapers were sent back for a variety of reasons. To inform the parents of the child’s health status, about 43% of respondents indicated they were returning the diapers with children inside. Over 30% of those surveyed claimed they were acting for no particular reason. About 14% of respondents thought it was difficult to dispose of old diapers locally.

However, according to the notice, irrespective of whether nurseries were sending back diapers or not, they need to inform the parents about their child’s health, in terms of the number, and status, of the children’s feces.
