Thu 27 October 2022:

The match fee for men’s and women’s cricketers (contracted) would be the same, according to a major statement made by the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) on Thursday.

In many ways, the choice to pay female cricketers the same amount as male cricketers for a match was a historic one. The senior women’s cricket players under contract would receive the same match pay as their male counterparts, according to BCCI secretary Jay Shah.

“I’m pleased to announce @BCCI‘s first step towards tackling discrimination. We are implementing pay equity policy for our contracted @BCCIWomen cricketers. The match fee for both Men and Women Cricketers will be same as we move into a new era of gender equality in Cricket. The @BCCIWomen cricketers will be paid the same match fee as their male counterparts. Test (INR 15 lakhs), ODI (INR 6 lakhs), T20I (INR 3 lakhs). Pay equity was my commitment to our women cricketers and I thank the Apex Council for their support. Jai Hind,” Shah’s tweet stated.

The decision was made just a few days after the BCCI AGM announced that the inaugural season of the women’s IPL will be held in 2023.

Since the Indian women’s cricket team placed second in the 2017 ICC Women’s World Cup, interest in the sport has increased. Since then, the team has advanced to the T20 World Cup final in 2020 and won the silver medal at the 2022 Commonwealth Games.

The New Zealand Cricket Board announced earlier this year that domestic women’s players and the women’s national team will be paid the same match fees as men.
