Tue 28 September 2021:

The Euro-Mediterranean Centre LIBREXPRESSION (Fondazione Giuseppe Di Vagno -1889-1921) boldly chose a suitable successor for 2021 after the competition ‘freedom of expression and satire in danger’ in 2020.

The category for the best political cartoonists in Europe in 2021 was ‘Cancel Culture and Political Correctness.’

With his “Black Lives Matter” cartoon, Tom Janssen of the Netherlands won first place.

Here’s what the jury had to say about the piece:

“Many have been, and still are, those who support, at least ostensibly, the anti-racist Black Lives Matter movement, but without doing much more than raising their fist to improve things on the issue. With his biting irony, precise and dynamic graphics, Tom Janssen unambiguously highlights the hypocrisy of our modern Western societies, quick to get emotional on social networks but indifferent to the concrete reality they face every day.”

Second prize went to Elena Ospina (Colombia) for “Censorship”.

Third prize was received by Marco De Angelis (Italy) for “Rinnovamento”.

A total of 160 newspaper cartoonists from 55 nations were invited to participate, and 218 satirical cartoons were submitted. An international jury, chaired by Thierry Vissol, director of the Librexpression Centre, reviewed the submissions.

The jury will present the 56 semi-finalists cartoons in an exhibition at the cloister of the Monastery San Benedetto in Conversano (Italy) from September 20 to December 31, and a printed catalogue will be issued.

The ten finalist cartoons, which are shown below, will also be offered as postcards to the general public.
