Tue 01 August 2023:

An armed attack at Sweden’s honorary consulate in the western province of Izmir left one Turkish employee critically injured.

According to the local governor’s office, the attack was carried out by a “mentally disabled” individual in the Konak neighborhood of Izmir around 9:45 a.m. GMT on Tuesday.

The attack took place outside Sweden’s honorary consulate, the state broadcaster TRT reported. The wounded woman, who was working as a secretary at the diplomatic mission, was in critical condition, it added.

Turkish authorities detained the assailant with the gun and launched an investigation into the incident, the governor’s office said.

Honorary consulates represent their nationals’ interests abroad but are not run by professional diplomats.

Muslims decry repeated Quran burnings, desecration in Western countries

Muslims worldwide have condemned the desecration and burning of the Quran in Denmark and Sweden, asserting that these attacks cannot be justified by freedom of expression.

The Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) has strongly condemned the recent despicable acts of aggression against the sanctity of Quran in Sweden and Denmark.

In a resolution issued on Monday following the 18th Extraordinary Session of the Council of Foreign Ministers of the OIC held in Jeddah, the Islamic body deeply regretted the continued issuance by the authorities in both Sweden and Denmark allowing such action to occur, and their failure to take the necessary measures to prevent such acts.

Citing the UN Security Council Resolution No.2686 (2023), which emphasises international tolerance, peace, and security, the OIC contends that authorities in both countries must take measures to prevent such acts from recurring.

In July, a motion was filed at the United Nations human rights body in response to a Quran burning in Sweden. The motion called on countries to review their laws and plug gaps that may “impede the prevention and prosecution of acts and advocacy of religious hatred”..
