Sat 14 September 2024:

The BRICS media summit opened in Moscow on Saturday, bringing together 120 media executives from 60 outlets across 47 nations, including Yusuf Ozhan, deputy director-general and editor-in-chief of Turkey’s Anadolu Agency. The summit’s agenda centers on the role of media in fostering stability and cooperation among BRICS nations—Brazil, Russia, India, China, and South Africa—as well as key partners like Iran, Egypt, Ethiopia, and the UAE.

Russia Takes the Lead as BRICS Chair

Russia, the 2024 chair of BRICS, is hosting the media summit for the first time, ahead of the upcoming BRICS Heads of State Summit in Kazan next month. The event, spearheaded by the Tass news agency, aims to raise the media summit’s profile and underscore its connection to the upcoming high-level state summit.

The decision to host the media gathering in Moscow was made during a 2023 forum held in Johannesburg, South Africa.

Broad Participation Reflects Expanding BRICS Influence

The summit follows a BRICS plus/outreach format, welcoming media leaders not only from BRICS nations but also from countries aspiring to join the group, as well as long-standing partners from the Asia-Pacific region and the Commonwealth of Independent States (CIS). In total, over 150 participants are expected to attend.

A special highlight of the summit is the “BRICS Family” photo exhibit, showcasing images from leading media outlets within BRICS countries. The exhibit celebrates the cultural richness and diversity of the BRICS nations and the broader global community.

A Growing Global Player

Founded in 2009 by Brazil, Russia, India, and China, BRICS expanded to include South Africa in 2011. Despite several countries joining in December 2023, the group decided to maintain the original acronym, BRICS, reflecting its founding members.

As BRICS continues to grow in both membership and global influence, this media summit serves as a platform to strengthen international collaboration and highlight the role of media in shaping the narrative of a multipolar world.
