Tue 10 May 2022:

On Tuesday, Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov arrived in Algeria to commemorate the 60th anniversary of the two nations’ diplomatic relations.

Lavrov met with Algerian Minister of Foreign Affairs and National Community Abroad Ramtane Lamamra, according to a tweet from the Russian Foreign Ministry.

Lavrov “took part in the wreath-laying ceremony at the monument to the heroes of the Algerian War of Independence,” the ministry added.

During his visit to Algeria, Lavrov is expected to meet with Algerian President Abdelmadjid Tebboune, according to Russian media.

Lavrov is “on a working visit,” according to the state-run Algiers International Channel, which “comes on the 60th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations between Algeria and Russia.”

However, no public declarations have been made about the files that would be reviewed during the visit of Russia’s top diplomat to Algeria.

An Algerian presidency statement on April 18 said Tebboune held talks with his Russian counterpart, Vladimir Putin, over the phone, during which they “agreed on the importance of exchanging high-level visits between officials of the two countries, and the upcoming meeting of the joint committee for economic cooperation.”

According to the same statement, the two presidents discussed world issues, especially tensions in Palestine and the Ukrainian crisis.

Lamamra discussed bilateral relations and international efforts to stop the continuing Russia-Ukraine war and its effects on global food security in a phone chat with his Ukrainian counterpart Dmytro Kuleba, according to the Algerian Foreign Ministry.

Algeria is a member of the Arab League’s contact group for mediating a settlement to the Ukrainian conflict. Algeria has chosen to remain impartial in the current crisis.

According to UN estimates, at least 3,381 people have been killed and 3,680 others injured in Ukraine since the conflict began on February 24. The true cost is expected to be significantly higher.

According to the UN refugee agency, more than 5.8 million people have fled to other countries, with 7.7 million people internally displaced.
