Fri 04 April 2025:
New regulations came into force in Britain on Wednesday, requiring European visitors to obtain an Electronic Travel Authorization (ETA) before traveling to the country.
The ETA scheme, which screens travelers before they arrive, is part of Britain’s efforts to enhance border security. It follows the rollout of ETAs to all eligible non-European nationals last year, including visitors from the United States, Canada, and Australia.
“Expanding ETA worldwide cements our commitment to enhance security through technology and innovation,” said Seema Malhotra, minister for migration and citizenship.
According to the Home Office, around 1.1 million visitors have been issued with ETAs.
The new policy requires all visa-exempt visitors to Britain to apply for pre-travel authorization online. The ETA permits multiple visits of up to six months over a two-year period, or until the holder’s passport expires. The current fee is ten British pounds (12.98 U.S. dollars) and will rise to 16 pounds from April 9.
Applicants need to provide biographic and biometric information and answer questions regarding suitability and criminal history.
Irish citizens are exempt from the scheme.

The ETA is a digital pre-travel permit required for visitors to the UK who don’t need a visa for short stays—think tourism, business, or family visits up to six months. It’s not a visa itself but a security check, similar to the U.S. ESTA.
Launched in phases since 2023, it now applies to most visa-exempt nationalities, including Europeans as of April 2, 2025. You apply online or via the UK ETA app with your passport, a photo, and £10—rising to £16 on April 9.
Processing takes about three days, though often faster, and once approved, it’s linked to your passport for two years or until it expires, allowing multiple entries. It’s mandatory for all ages, even kids, but not for British/Irish citizens or those with UK residency.
