Nearly a year after a mandatory vaccination policy was put in place for the Canadian Armed Forces, 299 military members in Canada who refused to get the COVID-19 vaccine have been expelled, according to Canadian broadcaster CTV News.

Military personnel were subject to a mandate announced by the government of Prime Minister Justin Trudeau in October 2021 requiring employees in federal institutions to receive two doses of the COVID-19 vaccine.

The decision was suspended in June of this year, although armed forces personnel were exempted from it.

In addition to the 299 military personnel, the report stated that 108 Regular Forces members requested to leave voluntarily as of Sept. 13 this year, citing the mandatory vaccination policy as the primary reason.

Meanwhile, it was noted that federal public employees who are anti-vaccine and used their leave rights after the government’s decision to require vaccination started to return to their duties as of June, when the decision was suspended.

The Canadian Ministry of National Defense has announced that the two-dose COVID-19 vaccine requirement for military and civilian personnel serving in the armed forces will remain in effect.

Vaccination efforts launched in Canada were met with opposition from some citizens, resulting in mass protests. Nonetheless, 82% of the population received two doses of the COVID-19 vaccine.
