CAR TYRES PRODUCE MORE PARTICLE POLLUTION THAN EXHAUSTS: STUDY

Sun 03 July 2022:

According to a study by Emission Analytics, a renowned independent global testing company, tyre wear produces over 2,000 times more particle pollution than what is expelled from modern cars’ exhausts.

Emissions Analytics weighed all four wheels – tires and rims together, without detaching – over at least 1,000 miles on actual roads in order to calculate tire wear mass emissions.

A proprietary sampling device is used in conjunction with this to collect particles at a set place directly behind each tire. These particles are then collected into a real-time detector, which measures the size of the distribution of particles by mass and number, via a sample line.

Typically, this measures particles from 10 microns down to 6 nanometres.  This combination allows the real-time signal to be calibrated to the mass loss, and, by using the size distribution, the proportion of the particles likely to be suspended in the air can be estimated.

Nick Molden, a researcher at Emissions Analytics said, “Tyres are rapidly eclipsing the tailpipe as a major source of emissions from vehicles. Tailpipes are now so clean for pollutants that, if you were starting out afresh, you wouldn’t even bother regulating them.”

“We came to a bewildering amount of material being released into the environment – 300,000 tonnes of tyre rubber in the UK and US, just from cars and vans every year.” He added.

The smaller the particles, the more volatile they are and the more difficult it is to measure them repeatedly. Growing scientific data suggests that these ultrafine particles enter the human bloodstream, lungs, and brain more easily.
