China’s number of artificial intelligence (AI) patents reached 378,000 by the end of 2023, Beijing-based state news agency Xinhua reported on Monday.

China’s growth rate is “1.4 times higher than the global average,” Ge Shu, deputy commissioner of the China National Intellectual Property Administration (CNIPA), had said at a press conference in Beijing on Jan. 16.

Ge stated that the number of AI invention patents in the country soared 40% on an annual basis.

He noted that invention patents in China’s core digital economy industries reached 406,000 in 2023, making up 45% of all invention patents granted last year, and 10% of the country’s GDP.

Ge added that technological innovations are boosting China’s economy, as the country saw a 21% annual boost in its average annual growth over the past five years.

Risks brought by AI

Artificial Intelligence (AI) is “common wealth of mankind,” but no country is safe from its risks, Chinese Premier Li Qiang warned on Thursday as he addressed the World Artificial Intelligence Conference 2024 in Shanghai.

Calling for deepened cooperation in AI governance and the establishment of an “international mechanism with universal participation,” Li said: “The risks brought by artificial intelligence are our common challenges. No country can stay out of it.”

He stressed “safe, reliable and controllable” emerging technologies, but lamented that many developing economies have been left behind.

“The “intelligence gap” needs to be bridged, he said, and proposed joint work among nations to foster a “fair and open” environment for AI development, according to daily South China Morning Post.

According to Li, around 2.5 billion people in the world were still offline, and many developing countries “have not really benefited from the development of artificial intelligence.”

But, he added: “Artificial intelligence is the common wealth of mankind. The Chinese people have always believed that true development is when everyone develops together.”
