CHINA’S FOREIGN MINISTER QIN GANG REMOVED FROM OFFICE AFTER MYSTERIOUS MONTH-LONG ABSENCE

The Chinese government has ousted Qin Gang as foreign minister and replaced him with Wang Yi, his predecessor, according to state media.

“China’s top legislature voted to appoint Wang Yi as foreign minister … as it convened a session on Tuesday,” the Xinhua news agency reported. “Qin Gang was removed from the post of foreign minister.”

After Qin’s last public appearance, a month later, the announcement was made.

State broadcaster CCTV did not provide an explanation for Qin’s dismissal during the national evening news.

In less than 48 hours after the Wagner mercenary group’s unsuccessful uprising against Moscow’s top military command, Andrey Rudenko visited Beijing. This meeting was Qin’s final public appearance in state media.

Qin, 57, of Han ethnicity, is a native of Huailai, in Hebei province. He is married with a son.

Known to be close to Xi, Qin was appointed as China’s foreign minister, and succeeded Wang, last December.

A graduate in international politics from the University of International Relations, he joined the Communist Party of China (CPC) in November 1986 and began his first job at China’s Foreign Ministry two years later.

A fluent English speaker, Qin was a visible presence in Washington through public and media appearances in which he defended the Chinese geopolitical position.

In recent years, he was seen as exemplifying Beijing’s turn towards aggressive so-called “wolf warrior” diplomacy.

A number of high-profile figures in China have gone missing for prolonged periods without explanation in recent years.
