CHINESE MAN FINED $31,000 FOR VIOLATING COVID-19 RULES

According to media reports, a Chinese man was fined 200,000 Yuan ($31,000) and given a two-year suspended jail sentence for hiding COVID-19 symptoms after a travel overseas and violating quarantine restrictions, as the country toughens restrictions in an uphill battle to eliminate the virus.

According to Chinese digital daily The Paper, a court in the Chinese city of Pingxiang, near the Vietnamese border, concluded that the man, surnamed Cao, did not inform border officials that he had a fever when he returned from Vietnam.

He also had proven COVID-19 cases hidden at the Vietnamese hotel where he stayed on his business trip.

After returning to China in April, Cao tested positive for the coronavirus and was placed in quarantine at a hotel, but he allegedly broke quarantine restrictions by sneaking out to meet friends. According to the publication, his actions resulted in the quarantine of 488 persons.

People who violate Covid restrictions face harsh consequences elsewhere as well. People who violate quarantine or provide false information about their whereabouts in South Korea risk fines of 10 million won (US$8,500). Breaching Covid-related public health orders in Australia is a criminal offense punishable by fines of up to US$11,000.
