According to the Wuhan Botanical Garden (WBG), which is part of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, Chinese researchers have discovered a new plant species of endangered orchids in southwest China’s Sichuan Province.

Ponerorchis wolongensis is a new species with white flowers. It was given the name Wolong after the Wolong National Nature Reserve, where it was discovered for the first time in July 2020.

The findings were published in the Nordic Journal of Botany journal.

It’s also the WBG’s second new orchid species found in Sichuan this year.

They had previously discovered a new orchid species, Corallorhiza sinensis.

The province is rich in biodiversity due to its diverse terrain, which includes mountains, plateaus, and basins. It is home to more than 450 orchid species.

The orchid family is the second-largest angiosperm family, with approximately 28,000 species worldwide, many of which are endangered plant species. According to the WBG, they can be found in a variety of terrestrial ecosystems.
