Mon 29 July 2024:

Chinese scientists have created a new AI-based model, “FuXi-Subseasonal,” to enhance sub-seasonal weather forecasts and mitigate the costs of climate disasters, according to state media reports on Thursday.

Developed by the Shanghai Academy of Artificial Intelligence for Science (SAIS), Fudan University, and China’s National Climate Center, the “FuXi-Subseasonal” model boasts a thousand-fold increase in operational speed, greater forecasting accuracy, and a longer forecasting period compared to existing international models. The Global Times reported these advancements based on statements from the development team.

“Climate disaster warning is another important value of this FuXi-Subseasonal model,” said Qi Yuan, the research team leader. He highlighted that the prediction period for extreme weather has been extended from 30 days to 36 days, enabling earlier detection of potential climate disasters and providing more time for response and mitigation.

The “FuXi-Subseasonal” model is part of China’s growing use of AI in predicting extreme weather. Last July, when Typhoon Doksuri struck China, the machine learning model “Fengwu,” developed by the Shanghai Artificial Intelligence Laboratory, outperformed European and American models in tracking the typhoon, Qi claimed.

Bai Lei, a scientist at the Shanghai Artificial Intelligence Laboratory, explained that the Fengwu model focuses on the forecasting stage, utilizing data from atmospheric reanalysis to produce more accurate weather forecasts. Ouyang Wanli, another scientist from the lab, noted that AI models like Fengwu analyze atmospheric data elements such as wind speed, temperature, and humidity to predict future weather with higher precision.

Unlike traditional physical models that rely on supercomputers, Fengwu operates on a single graphics processing unit, generating high-precision global weather forecasts for the next 10 days in just 30 seconds.
