CHURCH TO PRIORITIZE ABUSE VICTIMS OVER ITS OWN REPUTATION -POPE FRANCIS

Sun 19 September 2021:

When it comes to resolving clerical abuse, Pope Francis has urged Catholics to focus on the victims rather than the Catholic Church’s reputation.

“Only by facing the truth of these cruel behaviours and humbly seeking the forgiveness of the victims and survivors, will the Church be able to find its way,” Pope Francis said in a video message.

The message was prepared at a conference on child protection in Warsaw, which included church representatives and lay experts from 20 countries.

The pope said contrition must turn into a concrete path of reform, both to prevent further abuse and to give people confidence that real and lasting change would follow.

The pope said that admitting faults and failures can make people feel vulnerable and weak. But, he added, it can also lead to a time of grace and inner purification, granting new opportunities to love and serve one another.
