CYBERSECURITY COOPERATION DECLINES AS GLOBAL TENSIONS ESCALATE

Wed 23 April 2025:

Amid escalating geopolitical tensions and trade conflicts, Eugene Kaspersky, CEO of Kaspersky, has raised concerns about the growing fragmentation of cyberspace and the decline in global cooperation against cybercrime.

He told Anadolu that nations are increasingly prioritizing their own digital infrastructure, opting for local data centers and data localization to keep personal, economic, and industrial data within borders.

This shift is impacting Kaspersky’s operations, with setbacks in markets like the US and Europe, though growth remains robust in regions such as the Middle East, particularly Türkiye, Russia, and Latin America.

Despite challenges, the company is investing in “cyber immunity” solutions designed to be inherently secure and unhackable.

Kaspersky also highlighted a shift in global cybersecurity dynamics, noting that countries like China are pushing for local vendors, moving away from reliance on US-dominated services.

This fragmentation extends to law enforcement, where international cooperation has deteriorated since 2010. Previously, cyber police from various nations collaborated effectively, but now, with little coordination, hackers operate with impunity across borders.

For instance, Russian or Chinese hackers targeting Western nations face minimal risk due to the lack of cross-country cooperation, and the same applies to Western hackers targeting Russia or China.

While some successful operations, like arrests in Brazil and Africa involving Interpol and Kaspersky, show cooperation is possible, Kaspersky lamented the growing distrust and isolationism driving global fragmentation.

He expressed concern over trade wars and the erosion of international trust, warning that the lack of collaboration is making the cyberworld increasingly unsafe.
