Maulana Arshad Madani, President, Jamiat Ulama-i-Hind, has described the riots in the northeast Delhi in February as a ploy to push back Muslims economically, educationally, socially and politically.

While handing over a renovated mosque and 45 rebuilt houses damaged during the violence on Monday, he said that the riots were horrific and planned, and the role of the police and the administration in it had been dubious as proved by several videos that had gone viral.

“That is why the number of people from the minority community among the victims is much higher than we estimated. The loss of life and property was one-sided, but the way religious places of worship were targeted and houses were burnt is enough to show that the riots did not happen suddenly but It was pre-planned,” the Maulana said.

The February riots had left 53 people dead and some 400 others injured. Hundreds of shops and homes were razed to the ground. In the frenzy of sectarianism, miscreants had also desecrated many places of worship, set them on fire and chanted provocative slogans.
