Billionaire points to his early support for AI safety warnings as tech leaders debate stronger oversight

Billionaire entrepreneur Elon Musk has renewed his warnings about the potential dangers of artificial intelligence, saying his concerns about AI safety began more than a decade ago.

“I was thinking about AI safety long before 2014,” Musk wrote Monday on X, the social media platform associated with his artificial intelligence venture SpaceXAI.

Musk highlighted his connection to philosopher Nick Bostrom’s 2014 book Superintelligence: Paths, Dangers, Strategies, saying he contributed to the work and was personally acknowledged in its foreword.

Musk Warned of AI Risks in 2014

Bostrom’s book explores the possible consequences of machines eventually exceeding human intelligence. It argues that humanity’s future could depend on developing reliable methods to control highly advanced AI systems before they become superintelligent.

Musk also resurfaced a post he made in August 2014 recommending the book and warning that advanced AI was “potentially more dangerous than nukes.”

His latest comments come amid increasing calls from prominent technology executives and AI researchers for greater scrutiny of the development of increasingly capable AI systems.

Tech Leaders Debate AI Safety

Over the weekend, Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei proposed allowing independent safety evaluators to gain access to AI companies so they could assess whether firms are following appropriate safety practices.

The proposal has received support from OpenAI CEO Sam Altman as well as Musk, highlighting growing concern within the technology industry about the potential consequences of advanced AI.

Speaking to CBS on Sunday, Amodei said “there are real dangers,” associated with AI development.

“If we build in the right way, I think the probability of something bad happening is very low,” he said. “If we build in the wrong way, the probability of something bad happening is very high.”

The debate reflects a widening divide between efforts to accelerate AI development and calls for stronger safeguards, independent oversight and greater accountability as increasingly powerful systems are deployed.
