Fri 28 October 2022:

In an effort to accelerate the transition to electric vehicles and battle climate change, the European Union reached an agreement on Thursday regarding a law that will effectively ban the sale of new petrol and diesel cars beginning in 2035, Reuters reported.

Negotiators from the EU countries and the European Parliament, who must both approve new EU laws, as well as the European Commission, which drafts new laws, agreed that carmakers must achieve a 100% cut in CO2 emissions by 2035, which would make it impossible to sell new fossil fuel-powered vehicles in the 27-country bloc.

The agreement also called for a 55% decrease in CO2 emissions for new cars sold starting in 2030 compared to 2021 levels, well above the previous goal of a 37.5% reduction by that time.

The law, which was first suggested by the Commission last year, is a crucial component of a larger set of EU policies aimed at achieving the EU’s climate change targets.
