EU CHIEF TELLS RUSSIA MORE SANCTIONS WILL FOLLOW ESCALATION ON UKRAINIAN BORDER

Sun 26 December 2021:

If Russia moves aggressively toward Ukraine, European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen has warned that harsher sanctions will be imposed.

In an interview published Saturday in Le Journal du Dimanche, the EU chief stated that “Any act of aggression against Ukraine will lead to sanctions and consequences. They have been prepared.”

She was answering a question about whether Brussels could make Moscow respect itself after it passed the EU over and opted for dialogue with Washington instead.

“European countries are united, they are acting in tandem with the US and NATO. We want to get along well with Russia,” the chief commissioner said, adding Russia needed to stop “provocations.”

Russia has been accused by the EU and the US of massing soldiers on Ukraine’s border in preparation for an attack, according to Kiev. Russia claims it is free to transfer military forces anywhere on its soil and wants NATO provide security guarantees.
